History From Devon
Devon is a county that is actually quite rich in History and this is just one of the many reasons that people choose to go there on their vacation and short breaks. Of course it is not just history here, there are amazing beaches, national parks and groups of very nice people. this is a great place to look into when it comes to history and this is exactly what I am going to be talking about!
The Name
the name Devon is very important to people and they want to know where it came from? the name actually comes from the Celtic people that came to the area first and these people were known as the Dumonii, meaning deep valley dwellers.
The Settlers
When it comes to people actually settling down Devon was actually one of the first areas in which people settled down in after the ice age and Dartmoor was actually thought to be home to hunters from around 6000 BC. Once this was over the Romans came in and held the area for over 250 years and once this happened a frontier absorbed it and Wessex took over in the 9th century. on top of all of this it has taken part in so many civil wars that have occurred in England.
not just history should be mentioned here and you need to look into the sunny Torquay beach town as a place to visit. Why not try holidays in Torquay or spa breaks here for something a bit different. You could even go on Christmas holidays here!
Devon is a great place to visit and although one of those reasons is the history there are many other things to do and see so make sure you go there!
